Hi, I’m Theodora—Certified Dog Trainer & Founder of Theo’s Doggos
Educating human's and their dogs isn’t just my career—it’s my calling.
I’ve spent over two decades learning about animal behavior, training dogs of all breeds and temperaments, and helping guardians build stronger, more harmonious relationships with their furry companions. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing their connection strengthen!
Born and raised in Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood, I grew up surrounded by animals of all kinds—dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, fish, and even amphibians. From a young age, I was the go-to “animal kid” in the neighborhood, always eager to learn, care for, and connect with every creature I met. That early passion grew into a lifelong mission: to help dogs feel safe, understood, and loved—and to teach their humans how to make that possible.
My Training Philosophy: Communication, Not Domination
I’m proud to be a force-free, science-based trainer dedicated to helping dogs and their people thrive together through kindness, clarity, and trust.
You won’t find prong collars, shock devices, or intimidation here. I use positive reinforcement and modern behavioral science to build real communication—not compliance through fear.
Because training isn’t about control—it’s about connection.
Every dog is unique, and every family has different goals. My role is to meet both where they are and help them grow together. Whether it’s a shy rescue learning to trust again, a high-energy pup mastering impulse control, or a seasoned dog polishing manners, I design personalized programs that respect both ends of the leash.
How It All Started
My love for dogs began long before I turned it into a profession.
When other kids were watching cartoons, I was devouring Animal Planet documentaries, dog breed encyclopedias, and training manuals. I dreamed of having a dog of my own—and at eight years old, that dream came true.
My first dog at age 13, was a six year old mini dachshund rescue named Brownie, taught me the joy and responsibility of training. A few years later, a dachshund puppy named Copper joined our family, and together they became the first dogs I ever trained. Those early years of trial, error, and heart-to-heart connection built the foundation for everything I do today. In fact, Theo’s Doggos is named in honor of Brownie and Copper hence the dachshund logo. Theo's Doggos refers to my first dogs who were my first teachers, because I learned SO MUCH caring for them. And I’ll admit, I unfortunately made plenty of mistakes back then.
Like many people, I was influenced by the popular training methods of the time—the dominance-based techniques made famous by Cesar Millan’s “The Dog Whisperer.” His show was my only real reference for dog training then, and I didn’t yet know how damaging those aversive methods could really be to the relationships we have with our dogs. However, even as a child I knew deep down his methods weren't rooted in kindness and understanding.
That all changed in 2007, when Victoria Stilwell’s “It’s Me or the Dog” aired in the U.S. and I can still remember the enormous sense of relief I felt finding a trainer who led with kindness instead of control—who built communication through understanding, not intimidation. Her approach opened my eyes to the power of positive, science-based methods. Watching her evolve as a trainer over the years inspired me to evolve too! Now, I proudly train with compassion, evidence, and empathy at the core of everything I do. Yay for personal growth, the pursuit of knowledge, and most of all-science!
Over time, my curiosity became expertise. I completed certifications in canine behavior, psychology, training, nutrition, first aid, and CPR, and finally I took the plunge and officially got certified for dog training through the Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Behavior and Training. To this day, and forever more, I continue to stay up to date with modern behavioral research to ensure every dog I work with receives the best, most ethical care possible.
What It’s Like to Work With Me
Clients often describe me as patient, understanding, and full of creative solutions.
I take pride in helping people see their dogs in a new light—not as “stubborn” or “difficult,” but as individuals doing their best to navigate our sometimes scary human world. Each training plan is tailored to your dog’s specific needs, temperament, and environment. Together, we’ll build confidence, trust, and the kind of communication that leads to long-lasting results. And yes—we’ll have fun doing it. I promise your dog will actually enjoy the learning process (and you will, too).
Beyond Training
When I’m not working hands-on with clients, I'm continuing my animal behavior education, pursuing more certifications, volunteering at local shelters, playing ukulele, guitar or piano, performing improv comedy, acting, singing, painting, and traveling the world. Call me a Theo of all trades!
My Mission Simply Put
To raise the standard for canine education by putting empathy, science, and understanding first—always. Through Theo’s Doggos, I’m building a following that shares my vision of compassionate, educated, and truly effective animal training. Because our family members deserve nothing less.
They give us unconditional love—and it’s our responsibility to return it through patience, communication, and empathy.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story!
If you’re ready to start a new chapter with your dog—one built on respect, trust, and teamwork—I’d positively love to help. It'd be an absolute honour!
Let’s make life better for both of you.
